Republican Congressman John James, representing Michigan, a hub for General Motors, joined Mario Andretti for a press conference outside the US Capitol to address Formula One Management’s rejection of Andretti Global’s bid to enter the F1 championship. FOM, owned by Liberty, declined Andretti’s bid, citing lack of value addition and financial strain on existing race promoters.
James, along with 11 other Congress members, penned a letter seeking clarification on FOM’s decision, raising concerns about potential anti competitive practices. He question whether FOM’s actions aimed to secure a more lucrative deal in the future.
James hinted at FOM’s ties to Live Nation, currently under investigation for anti competitive behavior, implying a pattern of monopolistic tendencies. He speculated whether FOM delayed Andretti’s entry to enhance its own financial gains.
Andretti emphasized his team’s readiness for F1, having met all requirements, and expressed disappointment over the rejection. He urged FOM to reconsider, citing his team’s strong commitment and preparedness.
James escalated the matter to US House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, suggesting possible government scrutiny. He emphasize the need to protect American interests and hold accountable those seeking unfair advantage.
F1 declined to comment further, redirecting inquiries to its previous statement. The situation underscores a potential clash between F1’s decision making and broader concerns over fair competition and accountability.
