Red Bull Labels RB20 F1 Design as ‘Last Major Gamble’

Red Bull Racing’s decision to unveil the RB20, a significantly revamped version of its dominant RB19 challenger from the previous year, has proved fruitful with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez securing 1-2 finishes in the opening races of the season.

Chief engineer Paul Monaghan shed light on the rationale behind the team’s bold move, emphasizing the need to continuously unlock performance potential within the current rules framework before the upcoming reset in 2026.

“The decision to implement substantial changes to the car was aimed at providing us with more options to explore performance enhancements,” Monaghan explained. “This marked a strategic move for us, considering that we’re approaching the end of the current rules cycle and need to maximize our gains before focusing on the 2026 regulations.”

As teams gear up to gain an early advantage under the new regulations, Monaghan highlighted the importance of resource allocation and strategic planning for the future.

“The allocation of resources for next year’s development will be crucial, and we’ll need to make decisions early on regarding aerodynamic research and potential changes for the RB21,” he elaborated. “Our analysis suggests that there’s still room for improvement with the RB20, posing a formidable challenge for our competitors to catch up.”

Despite the visually distinct appearance of the RB20, particularly with its redesigned sidepods and engine cover gulleys, Monaghan clarified that the changes weren’t as radical as perceived.

“While the RB20 may appear significantly different, our focus has been on stability and incremental performance gains rather than radical alterations,” Monaghan stated. “We’ve maintained a balance between evolution and risk, ensuring that the car remains competitive across various track conditions.”

He concluded by expressing confidence in the team’s ability to continue extracting performance from the RB20 throughout the season, underscoring the collaborative efforts of the engineering team in pushing the boundaries of innovation.
