In an anticipated move, Nico Hulkenberg is set to depart from his current team Haas at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Hulkenberg, whose contract with Haas was due to expire. Has long been on the radar of Audi F1 CEO Andreas Seidl.

The 36-year-old driver will return to the team now known as Sauber, where he previously competed in 2013. His signing comes one year ahead of Audi’s scheduled entry into Formula 1 in 2026. Hulkenberg expressed his excitement about rejoining the Swiss-based team and the opportunity to represent Audi in F1.

“I’m returning to the team I worked with back in 2013 and have fond memories of the strong team spirit in Switzerland,” said Hulkenberg. “The prospect of competing for Audi is something very special. When a German manufacturer enters Formula 1 with such determination, it is a unique opportunity. To represent the factory team of such a car brand with a power unit made in Germany is a great honour for me.”

Hulkenberg and Seidl previously collaborated at Porsche’s WEC team, winning the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours together. Seidl, now leading Audi’s F1 project, emphasized Hulkenberg’s significance in the team’s development.

“We are very pleased to welcome Nico back here in Hinwil from 2025 and to compete with him in Formula 1,” Seidl commented. “With his speed, his experience, and his commitment to teamwork. He will be an important part of the transformation of our team – and of Audi’s F1 project.”

Audi's

Audi is also pursuing Carlos Sainz, who is currently with Ferrari, as a potential addition to their lineup. Sainz, however, is deliberating his options amid interest from other top teams in Formula 1.

The anticipated lineup changes at Sauber suggest that Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will depart at the end of year. Meanwhile, Ferrari reserve driver Oliver Bearman is expected to replace Hulkenberg at Haas, possibly on loan from Ferrari.

As Sauber aims to improve its performance and Audi prepares for its F1 debut in 2026, both entities focus on building a competitive package for the future amidst ongoing developments and regulation changes.
