Mercedes faced another demanding race weekend in China, failing to capitalize on promising second-place finish in the sprint race. Despite adjustments to their setup, both Hamilton and George Russell struggled to unlock the full potential of the W15 car.
Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the challenges, attributing the team’s performance oscillations to the inherent difficulty of setting up and driving the car. Looking ahead to the Miami Grand Prix, Mercedes plans to introduce new upgrades to address these issues and improve performance.
However, Russell suggests that the team may need to reassess its approach. Despite experimenting with different setups throughout the weekend, performance remained consistent, indicating that the car may have reached its current performance limit.

Russell advocates for a return to basics, emphasizing aggressive development and focusing on adding downforce. He believes that continuous improvement in this area is essential for enhancing performance, rather than searching for a perfect setup.
Reflecting on Mercedes’ recent development directions, Russell highlights the importance of prioritizing downforce additions over complex setup changes. He suggests that the team may have explored various concepts and philosophies extensively during the ground effect era, potentially reaching the limits of what is achievable with the current equipment.
With upgrades planned for the Miami race, Russell remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. However, he emphasizes the need for a simplified approach focused on maximizing downforce to overcome existing limitations and improve performance on track.
