Max Verstappen may soon confront a tough decision regarding which upcoming grand prix to sacrifice, as Red Bull Racing prepares for the possibility of another significant FIA penalty.
Following the Singapore Grand Prix, the sport’s governing body announced a stricter stance on drivers’ use of foul language. Verstappen quickly expressed his frustration over this decision after he described his Red Bull car as “f****d” during a press conference. As a result, the reigning champion received a reprimand from the FIA, requiring him to undertake community service as punishment.
In response to the sanction, Verstappen opted to boycott subsequent press conferences, suggesting that the controversy over swearing could even lead him to reconsider his future in Formula 1.
Ongoing Challenges for Verstappen
In addition to the fallout from the FIA’s decision, Verstappen has been grappling with a noticeable decline in Red Bull’s performance this season. The 27-year-old driver has not secured a victory since the Spanish Grand Prix, a significant departure from the team’s earlier dominance.
This decline was starkly highlighted during the Belgian Grand Prix, where Verstappen received a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his allocation of engine parts. He managed to finish the race in fourth place, but only after George Russell’s disqualification opened the door for a better finish.
With Verstappen currently utilizing five internal combustion engines—one more than the permitted allocation—he faces the risk of another grid drop from the FIA. This impending penalty adds further complexity to Red Bull’s strategy, as choosing the right track to serve the penalty is crucial for maximizing Verstappen’s championship chances.
Former F1 driver Christijan Albers weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Brazil may be the optimal venue for a grid drop. “I would definitely choose Brazil,” Albers told De Telegraaf. “You’re not going to do that in Austin. Brazil is better with its long straight and DRS opportunities. Austin has similar characteristics, but it’s a closer call.”
As the championship race continues, Verstappen and Red Bull will need to navigate these challenges carefully to maintain their competitive edge in the remainder of the season.
