After signing a contract extension with Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso is set to reunite with Honda in Formula 1 from 2026, marking a significant turnaround in their relationship since their troubled tenure at McLaren.
The partnership between Alonso and Honda during their McLaren stint from 2015 to 2017 was marred by frustration. Particularly due to the uncompetitiveness of Honda’s engines. The low point came at the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix when Alonso famously criticized the Honda engine as a ‘GP2 engine’ over team radio.
Despite the past challenges, Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe expressed optimism about their future collaboration. He acknowledged the difficulties faced during their previous partnership but emphasized the growth and strength they’ve achieved since then.
Watanabe highlighted their improved relationship and expressed his delight at the prospect of working with Alonso again. He noted Alonso’s active involvement since their McLaren days and expressed hope for a successful partnership aiming for championship victories.

Regarding discussions with Alonso about the future, Watanabe mentioned an encounter in Las Vegas where Alonso wished them luck and expressed interest in racing together if the opportunity arose.
Aston Martin, in negotiations with Honda to become their works partner from 2026, considered Alonso’s history with Honda. However, Honda assured Aston Martin that they welcomed Alonso’s continued involvement and viewed him as a top-class driver essential for their success.
Watanabe clarified that Honda did not impose any conditions regarding Alonso’s contract extension. Emphasizing the mutual understanding between Honda and Aston Martin regarding their driver lineup.
Overall, both Honda and Alonso are optimistic about their renewed partnership. Aiming for success and championship glory in the upcoming F1 seasons with Aston Martin.
