McLaren’s triumph in securing the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship came down to more than just speed and strategy. As team principal Andrea Stella discussed ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the team’s remarkable reliability played a pivotal, often overlooked role in their title victory.
The discussion was timely, as McLaren entered the season finale as heavy favorites to clinch their first Constructors’ title in 26 years. With Lando Norris starting at the front of the grid and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc way down in 19th after a series of misfortunes, McLaren seemed poised to seal the deal. However, with the unpredictable nature of motorsport, Stella remained cautious. The recent unpredictability of races like Qatar, where Norris lost a potential victory after a double yellow flag incident, and the collision between Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi, kept the tension high.
Yet, when the checkered flag waved at Yas Marina, McLaren had done it. Despite the pressure, McLaren’s reliability throughout the 2024 season proved to be the key differentiator, a consistency that no other top team could match.
Of the major contenders, McLaren was the only one to avoid any reliability issues that cost them points. Red Bull saw Verstappen retire in Australia due to a brake fire and lose a likely victory in Belgium after an engine issue during practice. Ferrari struggled with engine failures, including Leclerc’s power unit failure in Canada, while Mercedes suffered from engine dramas, leading to DNFs for both Lewis Hamilton in Australia and George Russell at Silverstone.
In contrast, McLaren’s only non-point finishes came from incidents that were out of their control. Piastri’s collision with Carlos Sainz in Miami and Norris’ crash with Verstappen in Austria were the only two races where McLaren did not score points. However, Norris was still classified in Austria, having completed more than 90% of the race distance before his car was too damaged to continue.
Reflecting on McLaren’s exceptional reliability, Stella credited the team’s operational and engineering excellence, drawing comparisons to his previous experience at Ferrari in the early 2000s, when reliability was treated as a sacred principle during their dominant title runs.
“We are where we are in the Constructors’ Championship not just because we developed a competitive car, but also due to the exceptional reliability we’ve maintained,” Stella said. “It’s a result of consistent investment in our operations, people, and the culture of the team. Reliability in Formula 1 requires constant attention – there are no shortcuts or guarantees.”
Stella emphasized that achieving such reliability is not an accidental achievement. “It’s a result of structured work, and a relentless focus on identifying and solving potential issues before they arise. In Formula 1, you’re only as good as your last race. The focus has to remain sharp at all times.”
McLaren built their historic title not just on performance but on an operational backbone that ensured the team could rely on their car to go the distance, race after race. Their success in 2024 underscores the critical role of reliability in modern F1, highlighting the importance of meticulous engineering and unwavering attention to detail behind every victory.
