Virgil van Dijk Named Ambassador for Liverpool Tourism in Collaboration with Expedia

Liverpool is experiencing a surge in tourism, and Virgil van Dijk is playing a key role in showcasing the city’s attractions.

Merseyside has seen a significant increase in visitors, with travel brand Expedia identifying Liverpool as one of their top 10 trending destinations in their Unpack 2024 guide. Searches for trips to Liverpool have surged by 100% year-on-year, drawing tourists from various countries including the US, Canada, Australia, Norway, and Ireland.

To celebrate Liverpool’s rising popularity, Expedia has enlisted Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, as their new ambassador. Van Dijk, the Dutch defender renowned for his leadership on and off the field, has curated an exclusive travel guide highlighting his favorite spots in the city. This includes iconic landmarks such as the Cavern Club, Royal Albert Dock, and, of course, Anfield, the revered home stadium of Liverpool FC.

Expressing his excitement about the partnership, Van Dijk shared, “Travel is a real passion of mine. We visit so many cities through football, but don’t get to fully immerse ourselves in them, so any time off I get, I am always looking to head out on an adventure with my friends and family. That’s why I am excited to be partnering with Expedia, as we both believe that we are all made to travel.”

Van Dijk hopes that his guide will further boost tourism in Liverpool, while also sharing his aspirations for future travels. “The football calendar is incredibly busy, but one day in the future I’d love to visit Japan, a country I am fascinated by. I’m a big fan of city breaks too. I love exploring new cities and cultures with my family,” he remarked.

Van Dijk’s collaboration with Expedia, driven by his unique perspective and passion for Liverpool, aims to elevate the city’s allure as a must-visit destination for global travelers.
