Carlos Corberan Leaves West Brom for Valencia in Christmas Day Move

In a surprising turn of events on Christmas Day, Valencia confirmed Carlos Corberan as their new head coach. The move comes after the La Liga side parted ways with Ruben Baraja following a disappointing first half of the season, where they accumulated just 12 points from 17 games.

Corberan, who joined West Bromwich Albion in October 2022, has impressed with his work at The Hawthorns, leading the club from the Championship relegation zone to a top-10 finish last season and a play-off semi-final berth. Under his guidance, West Brom have continued to perform well this term, currently sitting in seventh place in the Championship, just outside the play-off spots on goal difference.

West Brom confirmed that they reached a compensation agreement with Valencia, reportedly valued at £2.49 million, for Corberan’s departure on Christmas Eve. The Spanish club officially announced his appointment in the early hours of Christmas Day, with Corberan signing a contract that will keep him at Valencia until June 2027.

A statement from Valencia’s website read: “Carlos Corberan has been appointed as coach of Valencia CF, signing a contract through to 2027. West Bromwich Albion exercised a buy-out option in his contract to allow him to leave.”

The 41-year-old will return to his homeland to take on the challenge of guiding Valencia, who have struggled this season, towards greater success. In his place, West Brom have named Chris Brunt, Damia Abella, and Boaz Myhill to oversee first-team duties temporarily.

West Brom also released a statement confirming Corberan’s exit, saying, “Albion have reached an agreement in principle for Carlos Corberan to depart the club to pursue a new opportunity with La Liga side Valencia. The club wishes Carlos and his family all the best on his new journey.”

West Brom chairman Shilen Patel praised Corberan’s contributions, writing on social media: “I want to thank Carlos for all of his hard work since his arrival at the Albion at one of the most challenging times in the club’s modern era. I am grateful for his contributions and wish Carlos and his family all the best on his new journey.”

West Brom’s search for a new permanent head coach is now underway, with Sporting Director Andrew Nestor leading the charge. The club has stated that it will not make any further comment at this time.
