Sam Kerr has penned a new contract with Chelsea, extending her stay at the club until January 2026, despite earlier hints that she might be leaving.
Kerr, 30, joined Chelsea midway through the 2019-20 season and has since established herself as one of the most prolific scorers in English women’s football, netting 99 goals in 128 appearances for the club.
Her tenure at Chelsea has coincided with the club’s most successful era, marked by consecutive Women’s Super League titles and triumphs in three Women’s FA Cup finals, along with reaching the 2020-21 Champions League final. Kerr has also claimed the WSL’s Golden Boot twice and consistently ranked highly in the Ballon d’Or standings over the past three years.
However, Kerr’s recent season was cut short due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained during a mid-season training camp in Morocco, ruling her out of this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.
After Chelsea’s long-time head coach, Emma Hayes, departed for the US women’s national team, speculation surrounded Kerr’s future at the club, exacerbated by a video posted on social media where she hinted at a potential departure. Nonetheless, it was a relief for fans to learn of Kerr’s decision to extend her contract.

To celebrate Kerr’s commitment, Stamford Bridge and Kingsmeadow have undergone temporary renaming to ‘Samford Bridge’ and ‘Kerrsmeadow’ respectively, with a commemorative sign scheduled for display at Stamford Bridge’s Britannia Gate entrance.
Reflecting on her contract extension, Kerr expressed her excitement to continue striving for trophies at Chelsea, stating, “Having the opportunity to stay at a club like Chelsea means a lot to me.”
General Manager Paul Green emphasized Kerr’s leadership and exceptional goal-scoring prowess, highlighting her pivotal role in Chelsea’s success. He also looked forward to her return from injury for the upcoming season.
Chelsea initially teased fans with Kerr’s departure in a social media video, where she reflected on her four-year journey at the club, acknowledging the memories made with fans and teammates while expressing gratitude for their support.
