Premier League Likely to Stick with VAR Despite Upcoming Vote

Premier League clubs are expected to vote in favor of keeping the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system at their upcoming shareholders’ meeting. This comes after Wolverhampton Wanderers proposed scrapping the technology entirely.

Wolves argued that VAR has soured the fan experience and contradicts the spirit of the game. However, their proposal appears unlikely to gain traction.

According to reports, major clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, and West Ham favor tweaks to the existing system. The Premier League itself has already implemented some changes for the 2024/25 season.

A key addition is the introduction of semi-automated offside technology, aiming to significantly reduce decision wait times. Additionally, Premier League referee chief Howard Webb is expected to announce further reforms, including on-field announcements whenever VAR checks are taking place.

The Premier League has acknowledged ongoing concerns but remains committed to VAR’s potential. “We will facilitate a discussion…and acknowledge the concerns…However, the league fully supports VAR…” reads a statement.

This vote comes after a unanimous decision to implement VAR in 2018. Wolves, however, believe unforeseen negative consequences necessitate a reversal. They claim VAR has damaged the relationship between fans and the sport, while also undermining the Premier League brand.

The upcoming vote, scheduled for June 6th in Harrogate, will see all 20 Premier League clubs participate. With Wolves needing 14 votes for removal, the current sentiment suggests VAR will remain in place, albeit with potential adjustments.
