Nottingham Forest fans will need to remain patient to see who will don the Garibaldi Red next season. Despite nearing their first signing, Forest faces financial challenges that require urgent attention. The Premier League docked the club four points due to issues with the Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR). And they must sell a significant asset by the end of June to avoid further penalties.
Entering their third campaign back in the Premier League, Forest cannot repeat the frenzied transfer activities of previous summers. Financial constraints will dictate a more cautious approach this year. However, the transfer market is also challenging, with several clubs needing to sell before they can buy, complicating Forest’s plans.
Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo hopes to bring in three or four new players but aims to retain key players like centre-back Murillo and playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White. Murillo, the club’s player of the year, has excelled since joining from Corinthians for £12m, and fans see him as a promising talent. Similarly, Gibbs-White, who flourished under Nuno’s management, has become a vital player at the City Ground. Forest would demand a high fee for him.
If substantial offers for these stars don’t materialize, Forest may need to consider selling other players to meet financial requirements. The club could sell Ibrahim Sangare, a big-money signing from PSV Eindhoven, despite his failure to live up to expectations. Anthony Elanga might also attract interest. Although the club wishes to retain Callum Hudson-Odoi, they could cash in on him. Brazilian midfielder Danilo is another player they prefer to keep.
Forest is close to signing goalkeeper Carlos Miguel from Corinthians, which might lead to the sale of either Matt Turner or Odysseas Vlachodimos. The wage bill has been significantly reduced with the departures of Gonzalo Montiel, Divock Origi, Nuno Tavares, Cheikh Kouyate, Felipe, and Harry Arter.
Despite the current uncertainties, City Ground officials remain optimistic about actively participating in the transfer market once they meet their financial obligations. The focus this year will be on three or four quality additions. However, until the financial situation clarifies by June 30, fans will have to adopt a wait-and-see approach.
