Fonseca Reflects on AC Milan’s 3-0 Victory Over Lecce: ‘Good Moments, but Room for Improvement’

AC Milan’s head coach Paulo Fonseca lauded his team following their impressive 3-0 victory over Lecce in Serie-A on Friday. The win marked an important step as Milan prepares to return to Champions League action next week, though Fonseca acknowledged that there is still room for improvement.

The match featured a flurry of activity just before halftime, with goals from Álvaro Morata, Theo Hernandez, and Christian Pulisic occurring in a remarkable five-minute span. “Today, it was crucial to secure the win. After the derby, there’s always a sense of euphoria,” Fonseca commented during his post-match interview with DAZN.

He continued, “The players delivered a serious performance; it wasn’t flawless, but we created good moments and had opportunities. Not conceding any goals is always a positive takeaway.”

This victory comes on the heels of a hard-fought 2-1 win over Inter Milan last weekend. Marking Milan’s third consecutive league triumph for the first time since the spring months of March and April. Fonseca emphasized the need for his team to adapt and refine their positional play, stating, “This team must learn how to manage games like this. We discussed numerous details that require enhancement during the break. It’s essential to recognize when to wait for the right moment and identify available space. Our second half was an improvement.”

With a tactical formation that saw Tammy Abraham and Morata leading attack, the latter netted his second-goal for the club. Fonseca explained, “This was both a tactical decision and a recognition of their aggressiveness. Morata’s skill set allows him to operate as an attacking midfielder, filling spaces that other forwards, like Erling Haaland, may-not.” He added that the energy Morata and Abraham bring is infectious, positively influencing the entire team, including Rafael Leão. Who has also stepped up his work rate in response to their example.

Morata, who faced doubts about his fitness due to a minor injury, was substituted after 55 minutes for Ruben Loftus-Cheek. He reassured fans, saying, “I’m fine; I left the pitch merely as a precaution. Celebrating with my children gives me the strength to work hard every day. It was wonderful to hug them after the match; I’m very happy.”

Looking ahead, AC Milan will face German champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, following their 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool earlier this month. Fonseca is fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead, stating, “We immediately encountered the two best teams in Europe at the moment: first Liverpool and now Leverkusen, who may be even better than last year. We understand it will be a tough battle.”

As the Gunners look to build on their success, the focus remains on consistent improvement and adaptability as they navigate a demanding schedule.
