Lionel Messi continues to build his dream at Inter Miami, and his efforts extend beyond dazzling displays on the field. The Argentinian superstar recently made a personal call to former Manchester United and Argentina teammate Marcos Rojo in an attempt to lure him to MLS.
After conquering Europe with Barcelona and leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, Messi opted for a new challenge in the United States. Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, provided the perfect platform, and Messi wasn’t alone in his move. Former Barcelona colleagues Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez all followed suit, creating a formidable attacking force.
The impact has been undeniable. Inter Miami currently sits atop the Eastern Conference standings, boasting a league-record 25 goals from Messi in just 13 games. However, defensive frailties remain a concern, with the team conceding a surprising number of goals.
This might explain Messi’s outreach to Rojo. The 34-year-old defender, a World Cup and Copa America runner-up with Argentina. Is currently plying his trade for Boca Juniors in his homeland. While a proven talent, Rojo opted to stay with Boca Juniors after Messi’s call, recently reaffirming his commitment to the club.
“The truth is I was not convinced to leave Boca,” Rojo said. He highlighted his recent contract renewal and open communication with the club management. “If he [Messi] told me that he needed me here [at Inter Miami] for this year. I was 100% convinced to continue in Boca and I want to continue doing it.”
Despite Rojo’s decision, Messi’s attempt to build a strong Inter Miami squad is clear. While they boast a potent attack, defensive reinforcements remain a priority. The upcoming transfer window might see further efforts from Messi and Inter Miami to address this imbalance and solidify their championship charge.
