Manchester United’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite has received a boost following recent comments from Everton manager Sean Dyche. Who has conceded that financial difficulties might make it easier for the Red Devils to secure the young defender.
United have been active in the transfer market this summer, investing £36.5 million in Joshua Zirkzee and adding £58 million worth of defensive reinforcements in Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui. Despite these high-profile signings, Branthwaite remains on their radar.
Dyche’s admission that Everton is struggling with financial issues could pave the way for Branthwaite’s potential move. The Everton boss acknowledged, “I’m confident that the club are going to do the best they can to make sure we’re competitive. But the club’s financial situation is beyond my control.”
He added, “We need to balance the finances better. We’ve worked hard on that since I’ve been here, and Kevin Thelwell is involved in that process. But the larger financial picture depends on the money needed at any given time.”
Everton highlighted their financial strain by selling Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50 million— a move they had hoped to avoid. Branthwaite might be the next player to depart if United pursue their interest.

The Mail reports that United and Everton are currently at an impasse regarding Branthwaite’s valuation, with United holding firm at £60 million while Everton seeks £70 million. Though United have already bolstered their defense, the potential acquisition of Branthwaite could be a strategic move, particularly given Lisandro Martinez’s injury history and the uncertainty surrounding Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof’s futures at Old Trafford.
The ongoing takeover saga at Everton adds another layer to the situation. The Friedkin Group and 777 Partners both had their bids falter. And Crystal Palace minority owner John Textor is currently in exclusive negotiations to purchase the club. Though he must divest his 45% stake in the Eagles to complete the deal.
As Everton continues to navigate its financial challenges, Manchester United’s interest in Branthwaite could become a reality. Offering Ten Hag a promising young talent to strengthen his squad.
