Liverpool Furious Over Referee Decisions in Carabao Cup Defeat to Tottenham

Liverpool were left seething after Lucas Bergvall’s decisive goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final win, with former Premier League referee Keith Hackett criticizing the officiating that allowed the controversial goal to stand.

Bergvall’s 86th-minute strike proved to be the difference, but the young Swede’s heroics came moments after he had escaped a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Kostas Tsimikas. Referee Stuart Attwell did not penalize Bergvall for the challenge, leaving Liverpool players and staff perplexed, especially as Tsimikas was forced to leave the pitch for treatment.

Hackett, in his assessment of the incident, described the challenge as “clear reckless” and expressed surprise at Attwell’s decision not to award a foul. “It was a clear reckless challenge, and Attwell had a clear view,” Hackett told The Telegraph. “If he required help, where was the raised flag from the assistant referee, who was in close proximity to the incident?”

To make matters worse for Liverpool, Tsimikas had to leave the pitch due to the injury caused by the challenge. As per the rules, a player receiving medical treatment not caused by a foul must leave the field and wait for the referee to allow them back on. However, despite Tsimikas being ready to re-enter, Attwell did not wave him back on, leaving him absent when Tottenham launched their attack. Dominic Solanke’s run led to the assist for Bergvall’s goal, and Hackett pointed out that the area where Solanke made his run was one where Tsimikas would have been expected to defend.

“That’s a double bitter pill to swallow for Liverpool, and they have every right to be aggrieved,” Hackett added.

Liverpool’s frustration was echoed by manager Arne Slot, who questioned the rule requiring injured players to leave the pitch. “I don’t understand why this is always necessary,” Slot said. “It’s a rule, so I accept it, but then conceding a goal to a player who should maybe have had a second yellow card is not ideal. I don’t know, but the referee must have been thinking, ‘Is this really happening?’ when Bergvall scored.”

Despite Slot’s complaints, he acknowledged that the referee’s decision could not be overturned, adding, “He couldn’t change it, and he didn’t have to speak to the whole stadium about why he made the decision because it wasn’t a VAR decision.”

The defeat leaves Liverpool with a mountain to climb in the second leg of the semi-final, and the controversial officiating will certainly be a point of contention for the Reds as they look ahead to the return fixture.
