West Ham United has unveiled Graham Potter as their new manager, marking his return to football management after a 20-month hiatus. The 49-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to succeed Julen Lopetegui, who departed the club earlier this week.
Potter, who left management after Chelsea dismissed him in April 2023 following a turbulent seven-month stint, expressed his excitement about the new challenge. Renowned for transforming Brighton from relegation candidates into European contenders, Potter’s reputation suffered during his time at Chelsea under the club’s new ownership.
Speaking about his decision to join West Ham, Potter said, “I am delighted to be here. I knew it was important to wait for the right opportunity, and I believe West Ham perfectly fits me. My discussions with the Chairman and the Board were very positive, and we share a vision of hard work, high energy, and creating a foundation for success. We share a clear vision of what the club needs both in the short term and for its future.”
Potter’s appointment comes after reported talks with clubs including Leicester City, Wolves, and Ajax during his time away from the game. He emphasized the importance of selecting the right project at this stage of his career.
“It’s been 20 months since I was last in management, and I’ve used that time to reflect and recharge,” Potter shared at his first press conference on Thursday. “When I spoke to West Ham, it just felt right. The club has a strong identity and passionate fans, and I’m excited to work towards building a team they can be proud of.”

Potter’s immediate focus will be preparing the team for their FA Cup third-round clash against Aston Villa this weekend. Following that, the Hammers face Premier League fixtures against Fulham and Crystal Palace, both at home.
Joining Potter’s backroom team are assistant coach Bruno Saltor and first-team coaches Billy Reid and Narcis Palach. Long-serving goalkeeper coach Xavi Valero will remain in his position, having been with the club since 2018.
Potter concluded by outlining his aspirations for the club: “If we can create a team that resonates with the fans and reflects the values of the club, there’s no limit to what we can achieve together.”
With Potter’s appointment, West Ham looks to stabilize and progress after recent managerial uncertainty, aiming to deliver results that meet the club’s ambitions.
