Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko Aims to Dent England’s Euro Hopes Amid Arsenal Transfer Battle

Benjamin Sesko and Slovenia are both facing significant challenges this summer. The 21-year-old forward is attracting attention from top European clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain, all eager to lure him away from his current club, RB Leipzig. Simultaneously, Slovenia is gearing up for a tough Euro group stage against England, Denmark, and Serbia, hoping to make it past the group stages for the first time.

Group Stage Challenge

Slovenia faces a daunting task in Group E, competing against England, Denmark, and Serbia. Ranked 57th in the world, Matjaz Kek’s team is the lowest-ranked in the group and is predicted to finish last. This is only Slovenia’s second Euros appearance, their first being in 2000, where they failed to win a single game.

Star Player: Benjamin Sesko

Sesko, a familiar name to fans of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, is one of Europe’s most promising young talents. Known for his height, athleticism, pace, and goal-scoring ability, Sesko scored 18 goals in 42 appearances for Leipzig this season. His adaptability was evident as he outperformed fellow new arrival Loïs Openda, finishing the season strong and drawing interest from Premier League clubs.

Sesko

Zlatko Zahovic, Slovenia’s record goal-scorer, predicted Sesko would surpass his record of 35 international goals. With 11 goals in 28 matches, Sesko is on his way to fulfilling that prediction.

Slovenia’s Chances

Despite low expectations, Slovenia has the potential to surprise. They have defeated Portugal and the USA recently and boast talents like Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, one of the best goalkeepers of the past decade, and Panathinaikos’ Adam Čerin and Andraz Sporar, who have developed good chemistry with Sesko.

Kek, a tactically astute manager, organizes his team in a disciplined 4-4-2 formation that encourages goal-scoring, as shown by their qualification campaign. Slovenia finished second in their qualifying group behind Denmark, with seven wins from 10 matches and 20 goals scored.

However, their record against stronger opponents is mixed. They won only one of their four matches against Denmark and Finland in their qualifying group. Indicating that stunning results will be needed to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Key Factors

For Slovenia to progress, Sesko will need to deliver standout performances in his first major tournament. Serbia’s inconsistency under Dragan Stojković could play to Slovenia’s advantage. Additionally, having faced Denmark in the qualifiers, Slovenia will have insights on how to counter the Danish team’s strengths.

Overall, while the challenge is immense, Slovenia’s combination of emerging talent and tactical discipline provides a glimmer of hope for an upset in this summer’s Euros.
