The Argentine Football Association’s decision to immortalize Messi’s No. 10 comes after his pivotal role in the national team’s World Cup victory.

In a significant tribute to Lionel Messi, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has chosen to retire the iconic No. 10 jersey in honor of the legendary player’s contributions to the national team. AFA President Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia revealed this decision in an interview with a local newspaper, stating it as a tribute to Messi following Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2022 triumph.
“Once Messi concludes his journey with the national team, the No. 10 jersey will not be worn by anyone else. They will retire it forever as a mark of respect for him. It’s the least we can do to honor his incredible career,” Tapia expressed to Marca.
The No. 10 jersey holds immense significance in football, symbolizing excellence and leadership. In Argentina’s footballing history, this number has been emblematic, donned by exceptional players who led their teams to extraordinary achievements. Past Argentine football stars such as Juan Román Riquelme and Ricardo Bochini have proudly worn the No. 10 jersey.
Messi’s impactful presence in the Argentine team spans 180 appearances and 106 goals. His major victories, notably the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup, have cemented his stature alongside football legends like Maradona and Pele.
AFA’s Past Contemplation on Retiring No. 10
The AFA previously considered retiring the No. 10 jersey to honor Maradona during the 2002 World Cup. However, FIFA regulations, which mandate the use of numbers 1 to 23, prevented the retirement. Ariel Ortega briefly wore the No. 10 jersey in a match against Peru due to this rule. Subsequently, when Messi rose as a prominent player, he assumed the No. 10 jersey, as the initial plan to retire it couldn’t materialize.
