Experts have advised Marcus Rashford to make significant sacrifices in his personal life to focus on fulfilling his potential at Manchester United. The forward’s commitment and performance have come under increasing scrutiny, particularly after a challenging start to the current season.
Rashford, who signed a lucrative £300,000-a-week contract following a stellar 2022-23 campaign in which he scored a career-high 30 goals, has struggled to replicate that form. Last season, he netted just eight goals in 43 appearances, and this season has seen a further dip with only seven goals from 23 matches. His form slump has led to criticism from fans, pundits, and former players alike.
Louis Saha, a former United striker, believes Rashford must regain his passion for football to reach his potential. In a recent interview, Saha emphasized that Rashford needs to show a greater obsession with the game and curtail any distractions outside of football.
“Marcus has to actually show his obsession about football again,” Saha told Casino Utan Spelpaus. “If he’s doing something outside the game, he will understand the consequences. You can do whatever you want, travel everywhere you want, but there are consequences. If you’re obsessed, you don’t need those distractions. He should be obsessed, which will only improve his game.”
Saha, who has observed Rashford’s off-pitch lifestyle, pointed to the importance of focus for athletes who aim to reach the top. He argued that top performers, including those Rashford admires, devote themselves entirely to their craft and avoid distractions.
“When you see interviews with athletes that he really admires, they all say the same thing. When they want to reach the top, they train more than anybody. You don’t see them doing anything outside,” Saha added.
The former United forward also addressed Rashford’s recent trip to New York during the international break, which sparked criticism. Saha believes that Rashford can only enjoy such a high-profile lifestyle if he reaches the level of a Ballon d’Or contender.
“When you’re not playing at Ballon d’Or level, you have no luxury to go outside, because people will notice,” Saha said. “This is the balance that you need to find. I’m sure that he’s been advised to enjoy his life, to relax, but at this stage, with his status, it’s not possible. He has to be obsessed.”
Saha also stressed that Rashford needs to understand the scrutiny that comes with being a superstar and adapt to it accordingly.
“He has to be ready to focus on how to connect with the fans. This is an element of being a local boy. I don’t know how much he needs to do on that. When he is going to have targets, when he is playing in a system where he enjoys his football again, I’m sure that he’s not going to have to concentrate on what he’s doing away from the pitch,” Saha concluded.
As Rashford looks to return to his best form, it is clear that a shift in focus and priorities may be the key to unlocking his full potential at Manchester United.
