Real Madrid is growing increasingly concerned over the recovery of defender David Alaba, whose serious injury has left the club uncertain about his timeline for a return to action. The Austrian international has been struggling with lingering issues related to his recovery, raising alarm bells at the club.
Alaba suffered a significant anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left leg during a match against Villarreal in December 2023. Despite nearly a year having passed since the injury, his path to recovery has been slow, and he is not yet close to reaching the competitive level required to return to action.
Though Alaba resumed light training in November, he handled the ball on the pitch but made limited progress. As December has progressed, his enthusiasm for returning to the field has grown, but the club is proceeding with caution, aware that a measured approach is necessary to ensure a full recovery.
At Real Madrid’s training ground in Valdebebas, observers have noted that Alaba’s current fitness and performance during training sessions are not yet at the level required for high-level competition. His recovery exercises suggest that he is still some distance from match fitness, and the club is reluctant to rush his return, recognizing the importance of a fully fit Alaba for the team’s defensive setup.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti remains hopeful that Alaba can make his comeback during the current season, but with the January 2025 window approaching, the team still hasn’t set a definitive date for his return. The club faces a tough decision as to whether they should look to strengthen their defensive options in the winter transfer market or wait for Alaba to regain full fitness.
For now, Real Madrid is prioritizing patience and careful management, aiming to ensure that Alaba returns to action at his best.
