Virgil van Dijk Steps in to Settle Dispute Between Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst Over Penalty Duties

Virgil van Dijk had to step in to resolve a penalty dispute between his Netherlands teammates Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst during their 4-0 victory over Hungary on international duty this weekend.

The match, which saw the Netherlands dominate, was marred by an unsettling incident early on when Hungary coach Adam Szalai collapsed on the sidelines. Play resumed after Szalai was taken to the hospital, and both Szoboszlai and Van Dijk later commented on the troubling event.

Despite the somber atmosphere, the Dutch continued their strong performance. They were awarded two penalties in the first half, with Weghorst converting the first. However, controversy arose ahead of the second penalty, when both Weghorst and Gakpo expressed a desire to take the kick, leading to a brief on-field dispute.

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman confirmed that Van Dijk, as the team’s captain, was called upon to resolve the situation. Koeman explained, “We had agreed beforehand that Wout, Cody, and Virgil were the designated penalty takers. But when the second penalty came, I saw Wout and Cody arguing, so I called Virgil to decide who should take it.”

Van Dijk’s intervention saw Gakpo take the second penalty, which he calmly converted, continuing his impressive form. The 25-year-old has now scored in four consecutive starts for both club and country, cementing his place as a key player for the Netherlands and Liverpool.

Gakpo later spoke about the incident, clarifying that he was always ready to take the second penalty. “Wout had taken the first one, so I thought: ‘I’ll take the second one’,” he said.

With the Netherlands’ final Nations League match of the year approaching against Bosnia, Gakpo, Van Dijk, and midfielder Ryan Gravenberch will be crucial to their hopes. National coach Arne Slot will undoubtedly be hoping his players emerge from the game unscathed ahead of a busy club schedule.

While the penalty dispute was resolved amicably, the incident highlighted the importance of strong leadership, with Van Dijk’s intervention ensuring that team unity was maintained during a crucial international fixture.
