Former Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri praised centre-back Anwar Ali as an “asset” for Indian football while emphasizing the importance of players steering clear of controversies. Chhetri’s remarks came after the All India Football Federation (AIFF) imposed a four-month ban on Anwar for allegedly terminating his contract with Mohun Bagan Super Giant unjustly and signing with East Bengal after returning to his parent club, Delhi FC. The AIFF is also seeking compensation of ₹12.90 crore from Delhi FC and East Bengal to pay Mohun Bagan.
While Chhetri admitted he was not fully aware of the specifics surrounding Anwar’s situation, he expressed his support for the player, saying, “I love him, and he knows it. He’s one of the assets of the national team. I would want him to stay away from controversies as much as possible.” Following a directive from the Delhi High Court, AIFF’s Player Status Committee granted Anwar a No Objection Certificate, allowing him to play for Mohun Bagan.
Chhetri emphasized the need for national team players, particularly the younger ones, to avoid controversies. He stated, “I don’t know how much possible it was for him to avoid the controversy, but I hope going forward, all the prospects of the national team stay away from these things.”
Reflecting on his recent retirement from international football, the 40-year-old Chhetri shared his struggle to adjust to life away from the national team. “It’s not been nice; I miss it,” he said, expressing discomfort when teammates reminisce about their international experiences. “I’ve told them, ‘shut up, it’s going to take time. I’m not cool with it yet.’”

Chhetri also voiced his confidence in India’s head coach, Manolo Marquez, who is balancing responsibilities with the national team and FC Goa. He noted that the upcoming FIFA windows will provide opportunities for Marquez to assess players in the Indian Super League (ISL), benefiting the national team’s selections.
Additionally, Chhetri discussed the joys of fatherhood, particularly in conversations with his friend Virat Kohli. He remarked, “We talk a lot about what’s happening now, about kids, and the fun stuff that comes with it. But we haven’t talked yet about post-retirement stuff.”
Despite retiring from international play, Chhetri confirmed his commitment to Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League, stating, “As long as they can have me, as long as I can add value to the club, I’m here. The day I think I am not adding any value, I’ll be gone.” With Bengaluru FC currently at the top of the league table with 10 points, Chhetri remains focused on contributing to his team’s success for as long as he enjoys playing.
