Barcelona defender Eric Garcia is facing a difficult time under new head coach Hansi Flick, having fallen out of favor with the German tactician following a recent injury setback.
While many Barcelona players have thrived under Flick’s leadership, Garcia’s fortunes have taken a downturn. The 23-year-old, who had enjoyed a promising start to the 2023-24 season, has seen his role significantly reduced since returning from injury.
Garcia, a former Manchester City player, was initially a regular presence in the Barcelona starting XI, featuring in seven of the team’s first eight league matches. His versatility, which allowed him to cover both central defense and the defensive midfield role, made him an important option for Flick.
However, a mid-October injury sidelined Garcia for more than a month, and since making his return in late November, he has played just eight minutes of first-team football. Flick has appeared reluctant to trust Garcia in key fixtures, with the defender becoming increasingly peripheral in the squad.

The return of Ronald Araujo from injury further compounds this lack of playing time, giving Flick even more defensive options. Garcia’s chances of regaining a prominent role in the first team are now slimmer, as competition for spots in the defense has intensified.
As his importance to Barcelona continues to wane, Garcia has been linked with a potential exit, with speculation growing about a move away from the club in January. Barcelona, keen to trim their wage bill, could be open to offers for the defender, and Garcia has not ruled out the possibility of leaving, with the Premier League being one of the potential destinations on his radar.
With his future at the club uncertain, Garcia may determine his next steps by searching for regular playing time, either at Barcelona or elsewhere.
