For Joe Ironside, the magic of the FA Cup isn’t just about football—it’s about life-changing moments and unforgettable memories. The Doncaster striker, whose career journey has taken him through the highs and lows of non-league football, recently recalled one of the best days of his life. More than three years ago, he scored the winning goal for his former team, Cambridge United, in a celebrated third-round upset against Newcastle. 🎉⚽
“What a day, what a really special day,” Ironside said. “The celebrations afterward are something I’ll remember for a lifetime. The game itself is a bit of a blur, except for the VAR check for offside after I’d scored—it felt so long, even though it was only three minutes.” ⏱️
Growing up, Ironside idolized Alan Shearer and was confident that his team would topple Newcastle at St James’ Park. His dream moment came true when, following that memorable game, Shearer himself reached out via Zoom to compliment him and the team—a gesture that left a lasting impact. 📞✨
Reflecting on his unconventional career path, Ironside shared:
“Sometimes football’s about being in the right place at the right time, having the right manager at the right moment. Dropping into non-league was tough, but it allowed me to play regularly and get back into the Football League. I wouldn’t change a thing.” ⚖️🔥

Ironside’s journey has been a winding road:
- 16 first-team appearances at Sheffield United
- Moves to Alfreton, Nuneaton, Kidderminster, and York
- A stint at Macclesfield in League Two in 2019
- A year later, signing for Cambridge United and helping them secure promotion to League One
- Arriving at Doncaster in June 2023, where he has scored 30 goals in 94 games
Now, Ironside expresses deep gratitude for his non-league experiences, saying:
“I was lucky enough to get back into the Football League, and playing non-league has definitely made me appreciate my life now. You really appreciate all the things done for players at league clubs these days.” 🙏💙
Looking ahead, Ironside is already planning for the future. With an eight-month-old son in his life, he hopes to stay connected to football even after his playing days are over—aspiring to become a coach or manager while also collecting his coaching badges and studying part-time for a degree in sports business management. 🎓👨👦
As the FA Cup fourth-round approaches, Ironside and former Sheffield United veteran Billy Sharp. Who share a car journey between Sheffield and Doncaster, are preparing to face Crystal Palace. Ironside is excited about the matchup:
“Palace have top players like Marc Guéhi, and sharing the pitch with them is exciting. With our experience, anything can happen in the FA Cup. It will galvanize our city and bring in a bumper crowd.” 🎟️🏟️
For Doncaster, this tie is more than just a game—it’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and the timeless magic of the FA Cup. 🌟⚽
Fans across the region are eagerly anticipating the upcoming fixture, inspired by Ironside’s journey and his unyielding passion for the beautiful game.
