Nico Williams Brushes Off Transfer Rumors with a Simple Instagram Message

Nico Williams remains unfazed by the swirling transfer speculation linking him to Barcelona and Arsenal. The 22-year-old forward, who shone brightly at Euro 2024, has been at the center of transfer talk following his impressive performances in the tournament.

Williams, who scored two goals and provided an assist during the competition, including a key goal in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the final, has drawn significant interest from top clubs. His current release clause with Athletic Bilbao stands at £49 million (€58 million), attracting both Arsenal and Barcelona.

Despite the mounting speculation, Athletic Club manager Ernesto Valverde has tried to dampen the excitement. Asserting that Williams will remain with the club. In response to the transfer rumors, Williams took to Instagram, posting a serene sunset photo with the message “calm down” accompanied by a head massage emoji, signaling his indifference to the ongoing speculation.

Williams, a product of Athletic Club’s youth academy, has made 122 appearances for the club, contributing 20-goals and 26 assists. With three years left on his contract, Valverde remains confident in Williams’s commitment. “I have no doubts about Nico,” Valverde stated. “He looks good and happy. We have many challenges ahead, and I’m sure he will be excited to face them. Although the market remains open until the end of August, he’s content here, and we’re happy with him.”

Despite Valverde’s reassurances, links to Barcelona persist. Barca players Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and Alejandro Balde all engaged with Williams’s recent Instagram post. Which featured him in a Euro 2024 winners’ medal and an Athletic shirt, captioned: “From the hood to the glory. God’s plan is perfect.”

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has not shied away from discussing the possibility of a move, stating, “Economically speaking, we could commit to the signing of Nico Williams. I like him a lot. We are working with [coach Hansi] Flick on possible signings and leaving it to [sporting director] Deco to finalize the operations we are pursuing.”
