Arne Slot Reveals What ‘Incredible’ Giorgi Mamardashvili Will Bring to Liverpool

Georgia’s national team coach, David Webb, has praised Giorgi Mamardashvili as a “perfect fit” for Liverpool ahead of the goalkeeper’s highly anticipated move from Valencia to Anfield in 2025. The 24-year-old shot-stopper has been a standout performer for his current club, who are battling relegation in La Liga, and impressed during Euro 2024, solidifying his reputation as one of the top young talents in Europe.

Mamardashvili, who became Arne Slot’s first signing for Liverpool over the summer, will not join the Premier League club until 2025. In the meantime, he remains Valencia’s first-choice goalkeeper. His performances this season, including a remarkable double save against Getafe in October that earned his team a crucial point, have only heightened the anticipation surrounding his move to England.

Webb, who worked alongside Willy Sagnol as Georgia’s assistant coach at Euro 2024, spoke highly of Mamardashvili’s qualities, highlighting his potential to thrive at Liverpool. “Giorgi just feels like a perfect fit for Liverpool,” Webb told GiveMeSport. “He’s an outstanding shot-stopper, commands his box, and is very athletic—strong and big. One of his best attributes, though, is his character. He’s got a very strong mindset, is an extremely hard worker, and is determined to reach the top.”

Webb also praised Mamardashvili’s rapid rise in football. After joining Valencia from Dinamo Tbilisi, the goalkeeper was loaned to Locomotive Tbilisi, a relatively small Georgian club, before making the leap to Spain’s top tier. “To go from there to a regular La Liga starter in just 12 months is incredible. It’s a testament to his character and mental resilience,” Webb added.

Liverpool have been without their first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson, since he sustained a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace in early October. In his absence, Caoimhin Kelleher has stepped up admirably, including a crucial penalty save against Kylian Mbappé in the Champions League win over Real Madrid.

Arne Slot, who took over at Liverpool this season, expressed confidence in Kelleher’s professionalism and adaptability. “I expect every player to want to be No. 1, not just the goalkeeper, but in every position,” Slot explained ahead of Liverpool’s match against Manchester City. “Caoimhin has accepted his role with great professionalism, whether he’s playing or not, and that’s what I expect from all of my players.”

While Slot focuses on the present, Mamardashvili’s arrival in 2025 adds an exciting new dimension to Liverpool’s goalkeeper options. Fans are eager to see how the highly rated keeper will fit into the team’s setup and potentially challenge for the starting position alongside Kelleher and Alisson.
