Manchester United are set to prioritize the sale of three high-profile players, including Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, as they work to keep emerging star Kobbie Mainoo at the club.
With the club under financial pressure, Old Trafford executives have signaled that no player is off-limits, including young prospects like Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. While the club is keen to hold on to Mainoo, they face a significant challenge in meeting his financial demands, which are currently far apart from the club’s offer.
Mainoo, the highly-rated 18-year-old midfielder, is reportedly seeking a £200,000-a-week contract, a figure that United are hesitant to meet as they aim to reduce their wage bill. As a result, the club is looking to offload several of their highest earners to free up funds, with Rashford, Casemiro, and Antony among those potentially on their way out.
The Red Devils have shifted from an earlier stance where Mainoo was considered untouchable under manager Erik ten Hag. While the club would prefer not to sell, they are aware of the increasing interest in the England international, with Chelsea among the clubs monitoring his situation. As Mainoo’s contract nears its expiry, United could be forced to make a decision in the summer, though they remain hopeful of keeping the player.
In addition to these efforts, Manchester United is facing further financial constraints. The club recently posted losses of £312.9 million over the past three years and has accumulated a staggering net spend of €1.3 billion (£1.08 billion) since 2015, the highest of any club worldwide. This has prompted the club to seek more balance in its finances and player roster.
Furthermore, recent signings made under Erik ten Hag could also face early departures. INEOS, who now oversee the club’s operations, will not shield any assets this month. New arrivals such as Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee could be sold after just six months at the club, as the club attempts to meet its financial targets.
United’s upcoming transfer strategy may be further constrained by the club’s ongoing financial concerns, with manager Ruben Amorim working with a limited budget after a record £600 million splurge in the last transfer window. The club’s financial situation has ruled out potential moves for high-profile targets like Viktor Gyokeres, whose £80 million release clause is considered out of reach for the time being.
As Manchester United navigates a challenging period, the focus will remain on managing finances while ensuring key talents like Mainoo are retained, despite the turbulence surrounding the club’s financial and player decisions.
