Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has revealed that Matthijs de Ligt is likely to be sold this summer amid strong interest from Manchester United.
Rumors have heavily linked the 24-year-old Netherlands international with a move to the Red Devils. United have already secured Leny Yoro, beating Real Madrid to the young talent, but they remain keen on bolstering their defensive lineup further.
De Ligt has a history with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, having played under him at Ajax. Reports suggest that De Ligt is enthusiastic about the prospect of reuniting with his former coach in the Premier League.
Although United are currently prioritizing a defensive midfielder, they want to sign another defender if they can generate additional funds through player sales. Hoeness’s recent comments to the German media have opened the door for De Ligt’s potential departure. He stated: “It’s possible that a defender will leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Manchester United is Dutch… I would have no problem if he stays. Personally, I would not sell Upamecano.”
Previously, reports mentioned talks between United and Bayern over De Ligt, but the focus shifted when 18-year-old Yoro decided to join Old Trafford, turning down Real Madrid in the process. Yoro, a promising young defender from Lille, expects to partner with Lisandro Martinez in United’s central defense.

United’s pursuit of De Ligt hinges on offloading Victor Lindelof to free up funds. Erik ten Hag recently confirmed to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad that discussions about De Ligt are ongoing. He said: “We still have to wait and see whether De Li-gt will come. But the good thing is, during my vacation I was out of the process for three or four weeks. During that period it was really the club, the newly established scouting and recruitment department, that brought in these players.
“The fact that there are also Dutch players among them is actually a coincidence. Primarily these were players who were brought in by our organization. But of course I support them, let that be clear – and we still make the choice together.”
As the summer transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on whether Manchester United can finalize a deal for Matthijs de Ligt, potentially strengthening their defensive line with one of Europe’s most promising talents.
