FIFA is currently investigating a video circulating on social media that depicts members of the Argentina national team singing about France’s players in a manner deemed “racist and discriminatory” by the French Football Federation (FFF).
Following Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America, forward Enzo Fernandez posted the video on Instagram during the team’s celebrations. In response, the FFF announced its intention to file a complaint with FIFA regarding the incident.
A spokesperson for FIFA stated, “FIFA is aware of the video circulating on social media and is investigating the matter. FIFA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination, whether by players, fans, or officials.”
Fernandez subsequently issued an apology on social media, acknowledging that the song contained offensive language and expressing regret for his actions: “I got caught up in the excitement of our celebrations.”
Wesley Fofana, Fernandez’s teammate at Chelsea, characterized the video as “blatant racism.”
In defense of Fernandez and the Argentine team, Vice President Victoria Villarruel criticized what she perceived as colonialist attitudes: “No colonialist country will intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for speaking truths they refuse to acknowledge.”
However, controversy escalated when Argentina’s Undersecretary for Sports, Julio Garro, suggested that team captain Lionel Messi should apologize for the chants. This suggestion led to Garro’s dismissal from his position by the Office of Argentina President Javier Milei.
In response to Garro’s comments, the presidential office emphasized Argentina’s sovereignty and defended the national team’s right to express themselves freely.
Chelsea issued a statement condemning all forms of discrimination: “A commitment exists to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel valued.”
The incident has drawn parallels to previous instances of racial abuse against players of African descent, including France’s team following their loss to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final. This history has prompted calls for FIFA to take swift action in investigating and addressing discriminatory behavior in football.
