Bayern Munich’s rising star Michael Olise has made a sensational impact in the Bundesliga, but his journey to success may have taken a different turn had he remained in Chelsea’s academy.
The 22-year-old first gained recognition during his teenage years at Reading, where his dazzling performances led Crystal Palace to activate his £8.37 million release clause in 2021. Given the opportunity to develop and shine at Selhurst Park, Olise found himself linked with a return to Chelsea last year before opting to extend his contract with Palace.
Olise’s connection to Chelsea is significant; he spent seven years in the Blues’ academy before departing at the age of 14. After a brief stint in Manchester City’s system, Olise faced a challenging period without a club until Reading provided him with the platform to kickstart his career.
Sean Conlon, a former Chelsea coach, was among the first to recognize Olise’s talent and recommended him to the club. He believes that Olise’s departure from Chelsea was crucial for his development. Reflecting on Olise’s potential, Conlon recalled, “Michael was also training with Arsenal at the time because, before you move into the under-nines, you’re allowed to train with multiple teams. But he probably lived closer to Chelsea, and they obviously have a great academy, so he ended up signing for them.”
At the time, Conlon was scouting for QPR and had just left Chelsea. He felt that Olise would fit well into the club’s academy. However, both parties ultimately reached a “mutual decision” to part ways. Conlon argues that this decision has been instrumental in shaping Olise into the elite player he is today.

“Sometimes, people don’t consider that it can be challenging for players who are extraordinarily talented, as that comes with its own difficulties,” Conlon added. “It’s not been a perfect journey for Michael, but I think that has benefited him. Coming out of Chelsea at that age has given him resilience and a strong desire to succeed.”
Since joining Bayern Munich, Olise has made a remarkable start, scoring six goals and providing three assists in his first nine appearances for the club. Last season at Palace marked a turning point in his career, where he scored 10 goals in 19 matches. Conlon, who had always believed in Olise’s potential, noted, “He’s always been someone who scores goals because his control is so good and he is thinking several steps ahead of everyone else. Michael also has a wide range of techniques that allow him to see the bigger picture and choose the most appropriate finish.”
As Olise continues to shine in Germany, it’s clear that his path, albeit challenging, has led him to the heights of professional football, confirming the importance of resilience and the right opportunities in a player’s career.
