Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has emphasized that even standout performer Cole Palmer is not exempt from the demands of improvement and potential rotation, as the club gears up for a crucial festive fixture schedule.
Palmer, 22, has been a transformative figure since his move from Manchester City to Stamford Bridge last summer. With an astonishing 50 goal contributions in as many Premier League appearances, he has been instrumental in Chelsea’s resurgence as a force in the league.
However, opposing teams have taken notice, doubling up on the attacking midfielder to neutralize his impact. Speaking ahead of the holiday matches, Maresca urged Palmer to adapt to the increased scrutiny.
“He still has to improve in those moments,” Maresca explained. “When marked man-to-man, it’s about staying focused and learning how to navigate those situations. If you get frustrated, you lose your focus on the game. Over time, he’ll understand how to move better in such scenarios.”

The Italian tactician also noted that no player, not even Palmer, is guaranteed a starting spot. “We’ve rotated players strategically,” Maresca revealed. “For instance, Palmer didn’t play in the Conference League, so he starts in the Premier League. But that doesn’t mean he will always play. The same applies to Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia.”
Chelsea, led by Palmer’s brilliance, have emerged as surprise title contenders, sitting second in the Premier League with 35 points, four behind leaders Liverpool. Despite their strong position, Maresca has downplayed title talk.
“We’re ahead of expectations in terms of both performance and points,” Maresca stated. “But for us, the focus is on improving players and the team. We’re not in the title race—it’s just about progressing and winning games.”
As Chelsea prepare for the busy festive period, Maresca’s words serve as a reminder that complacency has no place in their pursuit of success. With Palmer at the forefront, the Blues aim to maintain their momentum while striving for continued growth.
