Thierry Henry has come under fire for his awkward and dismissive reaction toward Christian Pulisic during a post-match interview on CBS Sports’ Champions League Today. The incident took place after AC Milan’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in their Champions League opener at San Siro.
Pulisic opened the scoring early, slotting an angled shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson just three minutes into the match. However, Milan couldn’t maintain their lead, as Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk scored headers from set pieces before halftime. Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the win for Liverpool in the second half.
After the match, Pulisic appeared on Champions League Today, where CBS Sports’ popular panel—featuring Kate Abdo, Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards, and Thierry Henry—interviewed him. While Abdo led the interview with her usual grace, and Carragher and Richards chimed in with friendly banter—Richards even referred to Pulisic as “Captain America”—the interaction took a strange turn when Henry was given the chance to ask Pulisic a question.
In a surprising move, Henry declined the opportunity, lowering his head and bluntly saying “no” when prompted. His refusal left an awkward silence, which Richards broke with a nervous laugh. Pulisic appeared puzzled but remained composed. Henry, despite his earlier refusal, did offer some encouragement as the interview ended, saying, “Well done big man, well done.”

Fans quickly reacted to the exchange online, describing it as “awkward,” “cringe,” and “unprofessional.” Many speculated about Henry’s apparent discomfort, with one fan suggesting. “You could literally see the pain in Henry’s face when they kept asking Pulisic such dumb questions.”
Despite the odd moment, Pulisic provided a reflective and measured response during the interview, saying, “It was a good start to the game to get a goal, but it’s extremely disappointing to concede goals like we did in the first half on set pieces. They made it difficult for us all game, so obviously I’m disappointed.”
Pulisic has had a strong start to the 2024-25 season under new Milan manager Paulo Fonseca. Scoring three goals in the first five Serie A matches, even though Milan currently sit 10th in the league standings. He also expressed optimism about the future of the USMNT under newly appointed coach Mauricio Pochettino.
“I haven’t seen him yet since he got the job,” Pulisic said. “But I’m hopeful he’ll turn things around. It’s great to have someone as experienced as him coming in, and I think we have the talent. It’s time to finally have a coach that will take us to the next level.”
While Henry’s strange response caught fans off guard, Pulisic’s professionalism and focus on the future remained undeterred.
