Football agent Saif Rubie has been acquitted of charges related to sending a threatening email to former Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia.
Rubie, 45, received the verdict at Southwark Crown Court on Monday following his trial under the malicious communications act.
The case stemmed from an email Rubie allegedly sent to Granovskaia concerning the transfer fee structure for defender Kurt Zouma’s move from Chelsea to West Ham United.
During the trial, Granovskaia testified that she felt “physically threatened” by the email, but Rubie denied the charge, asserting that he was entitled to a payment from Zouma’s transfer.
The jury cleared Rubie of the accusation after a week-long trial, leading to an emotional response from Rubie upon hearing the decision.
Rubie explained that he believed he was owed a payment from Zouma’s transfer. Which amounted to £29.1 million, including a severance payment to the player.
Granovskaia, who increased her personal security following the email. Expressed feeling “very uncomfortable” and “physically threatened” due to the language used in the communication.
However, Rubie defended himself by stating that he would not risk threatening someone as influential as Granovskaia. Given her association with Roman Abramovich.
Rubie emphasized his position as a smaller agent compared to the stature of Abramovich. Indicating that threatening Granovskaia would be foolish.
Additionally, the court learned that Rubie intends to pursue a civil case against Granovskaia. Indicating ongoing legal proceedings related to the matter.
