John Stones scored a dramatic equaliser in the 98th minute to secure a 1-1 draw for Manchester City, extending their unbeaten home streak to 47 games across all competitions. However, his post-match comments aimed at Arsenal’s tactics revealed a different side to the thrilling encounter.
The match saw Arsenal reduced to 10 men when Leandro Trossard received a controversial second yellow card just before halftime for kicking the ball away. Despite being a man down, Mikel Arteta’s side defended resolutely, employing various tactics to run down the clock and disrupt City’s rhythm.
Stones remarked on the difficulties posed by Arsenal’s approach, stating, “It was a challenging afternoon for both teams, particularly with how they stop the play and use aspects of the game that not many teams do. You could call it clever or dirty, depending on your perspective. They broke up the game, which upset our rhythm, but we managed to handle it well.”
He continued, “They slow things down, with the keeper going down to get information onto the pitch. We had to keep our emotions in check during those tough moments, and I felt we did well despite some tough tackles and questionable decisions.”

City manager Pep Guardiola also acknowledged the challenges posed by Arsenal’s defensive setup. “With 11 against 10, it’s different,” he said. “They defended very deep, and I give credit to Arsenal; they are really good at defending as a unit. We were smart to avoid fouls and let the game continue, which ultimately led to our late goal.”
On the other hand, Arteta expressed his frustration over Trossard’s sending-off but refrained from discussing it in detail. “I prefer not to comment because it was that obvious,” he said. “I was already in big trouble trying to manage what happened on the pitch, so it’s not my issue. It’s miraculous that we played 56 minutes at the Etihad with 10 men. The decision impacted the match, but I don’t want to comment further and distract from what we achieved.”
As the teams left the pitch, City celebrated their continued dominance at home, while Arsenal felt the sting of a hard-fought point that could have been more. The match showcased the tactical battle between two of the Premier League’s top sides, leaving fans eager for their next encounter.
