The Premier League has dismissed Rodger Gifford from his position as a former Premier League referee and senior PGMOL referees’ observer, following a five-month ban for making racist comments toward a black official.
The incident occurred after the FA Cup second-round match between Newport County and Barnet on December 2 last year. Gifford, who has been involved in assessing referees’ performances since his retirement from active refereeing in 1996, made the offensive remark to the assistant referee, who was the only black person present in the dressing room.
The victim and other witnesses reported the incident, prompting a review of Gifford’s position by the PGMOL. Despite pleading not guilty and denying the charges, a Regulatory Commission unanimously found the charge proven.
This is not the first time Gifford has faced disciplinary action for discriminatory behavior. In March 2022, he received an eight-game ban for making derogatory remarks toward an eastern European official during a post-match discussion.
The incident has drawn attention to concerns within the PGMOL’s observer system, with reports of racial abuse and discrimination affecting the career progression of black and brown referees. Gifford’s dismissal underscores the FA and PGMOL’s commitment to addressing such behavior within the organization.
Gifford’s comment, “I am of a generation that calls a spade a spade,” reflects a concerning attitude that highlights the need for ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity within football officiating.
