Edin Terzic has resigned from his position as coach of Borussia Dortmund, citing a desire to usher in a “new era” for the club following their recent Champions League final defeat.
Terzic’s tenure culminated in a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium on June 1st, marking his final match in charge.
“After the game at Wembley, I requested a meeting with the club’s senior management to discuss my decision. After 10 years with BVB, including five as part of the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach, I believe it’s time for the club to embark on a new chapter with a fresh face on the touchline,” Terzic stated in an official club statement.
The departure comes amid speculation in German media that his assistant, Nuri Sahin, could potentially succeed him, although Dortmund has not yet made any formal announcements regarding a replacement.
A lifelong Dortmund supporter, Terzic had previously appeared to be living his dream by coaching the club. His tenure saw Dortmund’s surprising journey to the Champions League final juxtaposed against inconsistent league performances.
Terzic initially served as interim coach, winning the German Cup in 2021, before assuming the permanent role in May 2022. His team narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich in 2023, finishing as runners-up on goal difference after a season-ending draw.
However, Dortmund’s league form this year slumped to fifth place, their lowest finish in nine years. They also exited the German Cup in the Round of 16.
“We’ve shared many experiences together, and it has been a privilege to work alongside Edin in achieving our objectives,” commented sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “He will forever be linked with our recent successes, and I’m confident our paths will cross again. Edin now looks forward to pursuing new endeavors.”
