FA Cup Implements Radical Changes: Replays Scrapped, New Scheduling Confirmed

Initially, there were expectations that replays would only be scrapped from the third round starting in the 2024/25 campaign. However, the decision to remove replays will now apply once the qualifying rounds have concluded.

This move is part of a series of steps agreed upon by the FA and the Premier League to strengthen the competition. The new format, set for a minimum of six seasons, ensures that all matches are played on weekends, except for the fourth round, which has been allocated a window from Friday to Wednesday.

Furthermore, the fourth, fifth, and quarter-final stages will enjoy exclusive periods without Premier League fixtures. Additionally, the FA Cup final will be scheduled for the Saturday of the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season, with no top-flight games coinciding on the same day.

Chelsea and Aston Villa faced a replay this season, but starting from the 2024/25 season, that will change

These scheduling changes also mark the end of the mid-season break previously observed in the Premier League. Instead introducing a longer summer break following the European Championship in Germany.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham emphasized the importance of securing a robust format for the FA Cup. Highlighting its significance as a major revenue generator for the organization. He also underscored the additional funding allocated to grassroots football, disability football, and the women’s game.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters echoed Bullingham’s sentiments. Expressing pride in the increased investment provided to all levels of the game. He emphasized the importance of enhancing facilities for communities and lower league clubs across the country through the Football Foundation and Premier League Stadium Fund.

In summary, the key changes to the FA Cup from the 2024/25 season include all rounds being played on weekends. Exclusive weekends for the fourth, fifth, and quarter-final stages. The elimination of replays from the first round proper. And scheduling the final on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season.
