Atletico Madrid Snatch Last-Minute Equalizer in Tense Madrid Derby Against Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid’s Ángel Correa scored a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time, securing a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in a heated La Liga derby on Sunday. The match, which experienced a significant interruption due to crowd trouble, saw the home side rally to salvage a point after trailing for most of the game.

The referee halted the contest in the 69th minute, shortly after Real Madrid defender Éder Militão had put his team ahead. Objects were thrown onto the pitch by Atletico ultras from the Fondo Sur section, aimed at Real’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, prompting the referee to suspend play. After a lengthy delay of over 20 minutes, the players returned to the field, and Atletico intensified their efforts to equalize.

In the fifth minute of added time, substitute Correa struck, capitalizing on a counter-attack. He forced the ball home from close range after a well-timed pass from Javi Galan, bringing the raucous home crowd to its feet.

With this result, Real Madrid sits second in the La Liga standings with 18 points, trailing Barcelona by three points while Atletico occupies third, just two points behind their city rivals.

Reflecting on the tense atmosphere, Atletico captain Koke expressed concern over the fan behavior, stating, “These matches are filled with tension and intensity. This can’t happen on a football pitch. We are professionals and need to be intelligent. But four people can’t pay for the rest of the stadium.”

Real Madrid was missing star forward Kylian Mbappé due to a leg injury. Manager Carlo Ancelotti opted for a stronger midfield, bringing in veteran Luka Modric, who is nearing 40 years old. This strategic shift created a more balanced team that controlled much of the game but struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

The Big Issue

One of Real’s significant challenges this season has been adjusting to the departure of midfield maestro Toni Kroos, who retired in July after playing at Euro 2024. With Modric aging and Jude Bellingham taking on a more advanced role, Federico Valverde stepped up to assume Kroos’s responsibilities in the center of the pitch.

Madrid's

Valverde became the focal point of Real’s attacking play, frequently distributing the ball to Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo, or Bellingham, while also attempting long-range shots himself. The Uruguayan midfielder came close to scoring three times in a first half where Atletico struggled to mount any serious counter-attacks.

Atletico showed renewed vigor after the break when manager Diego Simeone introduced Brazilian winger Samuel Lino, injecting much-needed energy into their play. Just as the hosts began to look more dangerous, Vinícius Jr. broke past Rodrigo De Paul on the left wing, delivering a cross that Militão controlled before unleashing an unstoppable half-volley past keeper Jan Oblak.

As Real celebrated their goal, chaos ensued when fans threw lighters and bottles onto the pitch, prompting referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer to halt the match again. The stadium announcer warned that if disturbances continued, they could abandon the game.

When play resumed, Atletico maintained the pressure, but Real substitute Endrick nearly doubled the lead with a long-range effort that sailed past the post in the 89th minute. However, in the dying moments of the match, Correa’s late intervention ensured that Atletico left with a share of the spoils.

The match concluded on a sour note for Atletico, as Marcos Llorente fouled Fran Garcia and left the hosts to finish the game with ten men.
