Defoe Calls for Double Striker Selection in England’s Euro Squad

Former England striker Jermain Defoe has urged Gareth Southgate to take a bold approach when finalizing his squad for Euro 2024. Defoe argues for including both Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins alongside Harry Kane to bolster England’s attacking options.

With the Euros in Germany approaching, Gareth Southgate faces the task of trimming his provisional squad from 33 players to 26. The decision of who will back up Harry Kane has been a major talking point. Defoe believes the answer lies in selecting both Toney and Watkins, highlighting their contrasting styles that could benefit England.

“They’re different players,” Defoe explained. “I love Ivan because his temperament and link-up play is similar to Harry, he’s a focal point. Ollie Watkins, he’s dynamic, he’s quick, he’s strong.”

Defoe also advocates for a balanced squad with a mix of experience and youthful talent. He specifically mentions promising youngsters like Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, and Anthony Gordon, alongside established stars like Declan Rice, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka.

Furthermore, Defoe praises Gareth Southgate’s backroom staff, including assistant coach Steve Holland. He credits their positive influence on the players and their role in England’s recent success.

“The players love playing for him,” Defoe said of Gareth Southgate. “He’s got a good mix of staff and that’s why England are now in a position where we could go on and win a major tournament.”

Defoe’s overall assessment is optimistic. He believes England’s attacking options are stronger than ever, making them genuine contenders for the Euro 2024 title.
