beIN SPORTS USA in discussions to secure Portuguese Primeira Liga broadcast rights

beIN SPORTS USA is reportedly in talks to acquire the US media rights for Portugal’s Primeira Liga, according to sources speaking with World Soccer Talk. This development follows beIN SPORTS’ recent renewal of the Ligue 1 rights until the end of the 2028/29 season. Talks between beIN SPORTS and the Primeira Liga began after concerns surfaced regarding GolTV’s financial difficulties. Although GolTV has held onto the rights for the Portuguese, Uruguayan, and Peruvian leagues, its subscriber base has dwindled in recent years.

World Soccer Talk reached out to beIN SPORTS for comment. A spokeswoman said, “beIN SPORTS is focused on delivering top-quality content to North American fans, like Ligue 1, and has nothing else to share at the moment.”

If beIN SPORTS and Liga Portugal finalize a deal, the network plans to broadcast the games from MediaPro’s offices in Mexico City, according to sources. Currently, GolTV broadcasts Primeira Liga matches in both English and Portuguese.

The Portuguese league began its 2024/25 season on August 9 with Sporting Clube de Portugal’s 3-1 victory over Rio Ave and ranks among the top “football factories” in the world. Many talented players start their careers in clubs like Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting CP before moving to top European teams. Recent examples include Enzo Fernández, who moved from River Plate to Benfica before transferring to Chelsea.

As of March 2024, Opta Power Rankings rated the Primeira Liga as the seventh-strongest football league globally.
