Cristiano Ronaldo’s Controversial Walkout and Candid Comments on Erik ten Hag

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Dramatic Exit from Old Trafford and Unfiltered Views on Manager Erik ten Hag

In the October 2022 match between Manchester United and Tottenham, Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines for storming down the Old Trafford tunnel as an unused substitute under manager Erik ten Hag.

Despite United securing a 2-0 victory over Tottenham with goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo’s actions took center stage. Before full-time, five-time Ballon d’Or winner left field, heading to home changing room after removing his bib and training top

Erik ten Hag, the manager, acknowledged Ronaldo’s outburst, mentioning that he would “deal” with the situation but downplaying its significance. In his post-match comments, ten Hag stated, “He was there, I have seen him, but I didn’t speak. I will deal with that tomorrow, not today. We’re celebrating this victory, and now we have to recover for another big game on Saturday against Chelsea in Premier-League.”

As a response to Ronaldo’s walkout, ten Hag suspended the star player for the next game against Chelsea, instructing him to train with the club’s Under 21s. Ronaldo returned to the squad for the Europa League match against Sherriff and contributed a goal in a 3-0 win.

The incident further fueled speculation about Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United, and his departure was officially confirmed on November 22, 2022. In an explosive interview with Piers Morgan on Talk TV, Ronaldo discussed the walkout against Tottenham and expressed his frustration with ten Hag.

Ronaldo stated, “You don’t put me on against Manchester City out of respect for my career, and you want to put me on for three minutes against Tottenham? It doesn’t make sense. I think he did it on purpose. He doesn’t respect the way I should deserve. But it is what it is. The coach didn’t have respect for me. So this is why the relationship is the way it is.”

Forward accused ten Hag of lacking genuine respect and suggested that manager’s public statements about their relationship were for press. The end of Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United marked a tumultuous chapter, encompassing on-field success and off-field controversies.
