Chelsea’s acquisition of Cole Palmer from Manchester City in August for £42 million has proven to be a masterstroke for the club, with the 21-year-old emerging as a standout performer this season.
In Thursday night’s clash against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, Palmer faced taunts from the visiting fans regarding his past association with City, which he left at the beginning of the season seeking regular playing time. However, these taunts quickly turned to regret for the United supporters as Palmer showcased his prowess on the field.
Despite early jeers from the away fans, Palmer remained composed and focused, exemplified by his successful penalty conversion after Antony’s foul on Marc Cucurella granted Chelsea a spot-kick opportunity. Palmer calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, doubling Chelsea’s lead and prompting a change in celebration – a subtle response to the earlier taunts, with Palmer cupping his hand to his ear as if questioning the absence of chants from the United supporters.
This goal marked Palmer’s 17th of the season, further solidifying his impact on the team under Mauricio Pochettino’s management. However, a spirited comeback from United saw them level the score with two quickfire goals before halftime, and they eventually took the lead in the second half through Alejandro Garnacho.

And just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Palmer delivered a stunning deflected winner in the 101st minute, sealing Chelsea’s victory and having the last laugh over the United fans.
