Roy Keane’s Fiery Remarks and Apology to Harry Maguire Stir Controversy

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has once again ignited debate with his outspoken comments about defender Harry Maguire, following a controversial goal that eliminated Leicester City from the FA Cup. Maguire’s injury-time header in the fourth-round tie—despite appearing to be offside—was allowed to stand due to the absence of VAR, prompting Keane to lash out.

Reflecting on the decision during a recent episode of The Overlap podcast, Keane said,

“We are not defeated in Fergie time; we are defeated in offside time. It is a hard one to take because the game was decided on a mistake, and that is clear. It’s not about VAR where you need to measure millimetres—it’s half a metre, clear in a line.”

Keane’s comments come on the heels of previous criticisms aimed at Maguire. In June 2024, Keane admitted that he had been overly harsh on Maguire for footballing reasons and had even apologized for crossing the line in his comments.

“I was harsh on Harry Maguire for footballing reasons. I’ve crossed the line with Maguire,” Keane recalled. “I bumped into him a few months ago and I apologized to him.”

However, his recent outburst regarding a missed chance in a match against Liverpool has added fuel to the fire. Despite claims from Daniel Sturridge that a poor pass from Joshua Zirkzee was to blame for Maguire’s missed opportunity, Keane was quick to place the responsibility squarely on the England international’s shoulders.

“He’s passing it to a Premier League footballer. You’re passing to an England international player. I don’t care if it’s Harry Maguire; know your players,” Keane asserted, emphasizing his frustration with what he sees as a recurring issue.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended Maguire, stating,

“The so-called experts have their opinions—that’s their job—but it’s not something we have to worry about too much.”
Solskjaer, who once entrusted Maguire with the captaincy at United, suggested that criticisms from former players and pundits should be taken with a grain of salt.

Adding to the chorus of support, ex-Man United star Nemanja Matic told The Times that the treatment Maguire receives from the media is a “disaster.”

“Everything has to have limits, and some of these people on social media don’t have their own lives, so they just write negative things about someone else. I respect what Roy Keane has done, but he needs to understand that football has changed. A lot of behavior that would have gotten a red card in the past wouldn’t fly today.”

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor also weighed in, labeling Keane’s remarks as “bullying.” Speaking to talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said,

“I’ve seen the quotes and the video of it from Roy Keane, and I think he’s being a bit of a bully there. Harry Maguire’s been under a lot of pressure, and such comments only add to that stress.”

The controversy underscores the passionate and often volatile nature of football discourse, with former legends like Keane continuing to influence conversations around the game. While Maguire has faced his share of criticism in recent times, many believe that constructive dialogue and support from former players are essential for the evolution of the sport.

As the debate rages on, discussions continue about how officials manage the game and how high-pressure decisions affect player morale and team performance.
