In a thrilling Colombo match, Zimbabwe scripted history, securing their inaugural T20 international victory against Sri Lanka. The challenging chase of 174 required Zimbabwe to tackle 20 runs in the last over bowled by Angelo Mathews. In a stunning turn of events, they emerged triumphant by four wickets with a ball to spare, with Luke Jongwe proving to be the match-winner.

Luke Jongwe, delivering a stellar all-round performance, claimed two wickets and earned the man of the match title. His aggressive batting in the final over, marked by three powerful sixes, played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s historic win.

Jongwe, expressing his elation, stated, “I am just lost for words… very pleased with what we did today.”

The nail-biting last over showcased Jongwe’s aggressive onslaught, including a six over long-on on the first ball. Despite Mathews’ efforts, Zimbabwe capitalized on a dropped catch, ultimately needing three runs off four balls. Clive Madande sealed the victory with a six, concluding the match in style.

Zimbabwe’s skipper Sikandar Raza expressed disbelief at the win, stating, “We kept fighting…. We took it to the last and glad we pulled it off.”

Sri Lanka grappled with challenges, facing sloppy fielding, dropped catches, and misfields. Craig Ervine’s career-best T20I score of 70 played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s success. Sri Lanka’s captain Wanindu Hasaranga acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, saying, “Our top order was a flop, and our fielding was very disappointing.”

With the series tied at 1-1, the Thursday finale is poised to be the decisive match determining the series victor in this unpredictable T20 cricket encounter.
