Zaheer Khan will join Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their mentor for IPL 2025, replacing Gautam Gambhir, who left after IPL 2023 to mentor Kolkata Knight Riders and later became the head coach of the India men’s team. It is not yet clear if Zaheer will also take on the role of LSG’s bowling coach, a position vacated by Morne Morkel when he joined Gambhir’s coaching staff with the Indian team.

Zaheer previously worked with the Mumbai Indians (MI) from 2018 to 2022, serving as director of cricket and then head of global development. He also played for MI, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils, taking 102 wickets in 100 games over ten seasons, and retired from all forms of cricket in 2017.
LSG wants Zaheer to have a broader role, which may involve scouting and player development programs during the off-season.The team’s coaching staff is led by Justin Langer, with Lance Klusener and Adam Voges as assistants. After making the playoffs in their first two seasons, the KL Rahul-led LSG narrowly missed the top four in IPL 2024 on net run rate.
Zaheer’s return to the IPL aligns with teams preparing for a mega auction. The IPL plans to announce retention rules by early September.
