Sanath Jayasuriya, former Sri Lanka captain, will serve as Sri Lanka’s interim head coach. He will lead the team through a home limited-overs series against India and an away Test tour in England, concluding in mid-September.
Previously serving as Sri Lanka men’s chief selector and cricket consultant for Sri Lanka Cricket, Jayasuriya brings extensive international cricketing experience to his new coaching role.
The decision to appoint Jayasuriya follows Chris Silverwood’s resignation as head coach at the end of June, prompting Sri Lanka Cricket to seek a temporary solution. Ashley de Silva, SLC chief executive, emphasized Jayasuriya’s capability to guide the national team effectively during this interim period.
Despite controversies during his tenures as chief selector, Jayasuriya’s cricketing acumen and strategic oversight, seen in roles with the Dambulla franchise and as team mentor for Kandy Falcons, underscore his leadership credentials.
Jayasuriya’s return to an official role with the national team follows his earlier involvement as a consultant during Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign. His appointment fills the gap left by Mahela Jayawardene’s recent resignation, aiming to stabilize team management amid ongoing transitions in Sri Lankan cricket.
