Sri Lanka has been a consistent runner-up, finishing as the second-best team five times, while Pakistan has reached the final twice. The tournament format has changed over the years: the first four editions featured the ODI format, but since then, including the upcoming one, teams have played in the T20I format.

In the 2022 edition, seven teams participated in a round-robin format, with India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Malaysia, and Pakistan competing. The top four teams advanced to the semifinals.

For 2024, the tournament has expanded to eight teams, divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals. The finale of the Asia Cup will take place at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on July 28.
