Matthew Wade has opted to miss the beginning of IPL 2024 with Gujarat Titans to represent Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield final. Tasmania has secured a spot in the Shield decider and is likely to host the match in Hobart, aiming to clinch their first title since 2012-13.

The Shield final runs from March 21-25, potentially causing Wade to miss Gujarat Titans’ first match against Mumbai Indians on March 25. His availability for the following game against Chennai Super Kings on March 27 is uncertain. The third match against Sunrisers Hyderabad is scheduled for March 31.

Tasmania’s head coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed Wade’s decision, highlighting his invaluable experience and late-season contributions to the team. Wade, who returned to Tasmania in 2017-18 after a decade with Victoria, played a crucial role in Tasmania’s recent victory over Victoria, securing their place in the final.

Wade’s return to Tasmania saw him open the batting for the first time in his Shield career, showcasing his adaptability and versatility. His notable performances have solidified Tasmania’s position in the final, with their last regular-season match against South Australia looming. The outcome of the pivotal clash between Victoria and Western Australia will determine Tasmania’s final opponent, with Scott Boland expected to join Victoria’s squad following his stint in the Test series against New Zealand.
