Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag criticized Shakib Al Hasan for his recent poor performances during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Shakib managed only three runs in Bangladesh’s close loss to South Africa in New York on June 10, prompting Sehwag to question Shakib’s role in the team despite his experience.

Shakib Al Hasan, who recently returned to the squad after injury and relinquishing captaincy, has been under scrutiny for not playing up to his potential. Sehwag suggested that Shakib should have played more responsibly, given his stature in Bangladesh cricket.
“If Shakib Al Hasan was included in the squad for his experience, we didn’t see that. At least spend some time at the wicket. You’re not Hayden or Gilchrist who can hit pull shots. Play according to your standards,” Sehwag remarked to Cricbuzz.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the expectations on Shakib due to his long tenure in international cricket. Patel highlighted that younger players look up to Shakib, especially during challenging times for the team.
“There are expectations on Shakib Al Hasan, which is natural given his experience since the first T20 World Cup. When the team is in trouble, the youngsters will naturally turn to him. Shakib mentioned it was a wake-up call after losing to USA. If he still needs wake-up calls after 15 years of playing, it raises questions,” Patel commented.
